In technical analysis, HH and HL are shorthand for:

πŸ”Ί HH = Higher High

This means the current high is higher than the previous high.

It shows increasing bullish strength β€” buyers are pushing prices higher than before.

πŸ”» HL = Higher Low

This means the current low is higher than the previous low.

It shows that during pullbacks, sellers can’t push the price as low as before β€” a bullish sign.

πŸ“ˆ Together: HH + HL = Uptrend

An uptrend is defined by a series of Higher Highs (HH) and Higher Lows (HL).

Example (prices in order):

iniCopyEditLow1 = 100
High1 = 110
Low2 = 105  ← HL
High2 = 115  ← HH
Low3 = 110  ← HL
High3 = 120  ← HH

This pattern suggests the stock is trending upward, and traders may look to buy on HL pullbacks.

❗Opposites

  • LH = Lower High β†’ bearish signal
  • LL = Lower Low β†’ bearish signal
  • LH + LL = Downtrend
